For the Crust:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the hot water, until smooth.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely before glazing.
- For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cake.
