Classic Golden Skillet Cornbread with Honey Butter

This tender, golden cornbread is baked in a cast-iron skillet and topped with a sweet honey butter for a classic Southern treat.

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • For Honey Butter:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a 9-inch cast-iron skillet in the oven to preheat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine buttermilk, melted butter, oil, egg, and 1/4 cup honey. Mix well.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Carefully remove hot skillet from oven and add remaining butter; swirl to coat.
  6. Pour batter into hot skillet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For honey butter, mix softened butter and 1/4 cup honey until smooth.
  8. Serve cornbread warm with honey butter.
