Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy, tangy fried green tomatoes make a delicious Southern appetizer or side dish.

For the Crust:

  • 4 medium green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds and set aside.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk together.
  4. Place cornmeal in a third shallow bowl.
  5. Dredge tomato slices in flour mixture, dip in egg mixture, then coat with cornmeal.
  6. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry tomatoes in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
