Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy

Juicy hamburger steaks smothered in rich onion gravy, a comforting Southern-style dish made with simple ingredients for an easy, hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 tspsalt
  • 1/4 tspblack pepper
  • 1/4 tspgarlic powder
  • 1/4 tsponion powder
  • 1 tbspoil (canola or vegetable)
  • 1large onion, sliced
  • 2 cupsbeef broth (low-sodium if preferred)
  • 1 tbspWorcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbspflour (optional, for thickening)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined, then form into two large or four medium patties.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook 5–6 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until caramelized and golden.
  4. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping the pan to release browned bits. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. If you prefer thicker gravy, whisk flour with a few tablespoons of water to make a slurry. Stir into the skillet and cook 2–3 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  6. Return the cooked patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over the top. Simmer another 2–3 minutes to combine flavors.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy, flavorful patties.
Do not press down on patties while cooking—this releases juices and dries them out.
Caramelize onions slowly over medium heat for the best flavor.
To make gluten-free, use cornstarch or gluten-free flour for thickening.
Double the gravy if serving with mashed potatoes—it’s that good!
